From the author:
Like many teachers, I always recommended dictionaries to my students. Many of them owned dictionaries but rarely used them. No one had ever instructed them on the use of this tool. Everyone seemed to agree that if you owned a dictionary you automatically knew how to use it.
Once I began formal instruction on dictionary usage, I discovered whole segments of information on our language that no one had taught my students. They did not understand why words were divided a certain way. They could not decode the “funny looking” pronunciation symbols.
The one time in my teaching history when I received a standing ovation from a class was after a lecture on how to pronounce words. Many students said, “Why didn’t anybody teach us this before?”
I decided then to train all my English students on how to use the dictionary, and how to make of it a friend for life.
