Students should be able to define what a sentence is and what a sentence is not. They should be able to identify different kinds of sentences and should know basic punctuation and the rules for capitalization. Students should know every sentence must have a subject and a verb.  They should know that there are regular and irregular verbs, compound verbs and different verb tenses. When students understand these simple English basics, writing becomes natural and easy to do.
